The Red Cross of Serbia acts as an independent national society whose continuity of the international recognition since 1876, has been confirmed on 21 September 2006 by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Red Cross of Serbia consists of two Provincial Red Cross branches and 183 branches in towns and municipalities. At all organizational levels approximately 700 professional staff are employed, whereas programs are implemented by the engagement of about 10,000 volunteers who take part in activities on regular basis. There are also about 60,000 volunteers who occasionally join the Red Cross activities in conformity with their affinities. More than 60 percent of the Red Cross of Serbia volunteers are young people.
At the end of 2005 the Parliament of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Law on Red Cross that defines the public powers conferred to the Red Cross by the State, programs resulting from the Red Cross mission which are not the public powers as well as the services Red Cross can provide. During 2006, the new Statute of the Red Cross of Serbia has been adopted which is in accordance with the international standards of the Movement. The new Statute and the Law on the Red Cross of Serbia position the National Society as an independent, humanitarian, voluntary organization which is the auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field.
