Psycho-social support

This year, Serbian Red Cross is marking the 10th annivesary of the implementation of PSS programme. From the very beginning, the programme has been financially supported by IFRC. During the ten years long history, this programme has passed through the different forms: from the Centers for trauma- and violence victims, through Red Cross clubs for different groups of beneficiaries - either for elderly persons, youth, children, self-supporting mothers, children with special needs, as well as for Roma children.
Some of the programme implementation forms are mobile libraries, mobile cinemas or theaters on the wheels, ready to offer its services to distant beneficiaries. Because of the big variety of subjects and needs of the population in our country, the programme is very well accepted in Red Cross Society itself, as well as by programme beneficiaries. In favor of this claim speaks the fact that until the end of 2001 programme was implemented in 99 out of 189 Red Cross branches.
Starting from 2002, the donors have been focused on three most vulnerable target groups, i.e. Roma children, children with special needs and persons in Collective Centers. It was up to Serbian Red Cross, relying on its own capacities and on support of the local community, to continue to implement on their own some other subjects for numerous groups of the programme (children, youth, self-support mothers, elderly persons…). The redesigned programme is implemented in 37 RC branches and it includes three target groups: The project known as “ To leave or to stay “ intended for persons in collective centers is implemented by the following RC branches: Doljevac, Kraljevo, Paracin, Vrnjacka Banja, Bajina Basta, Bor, Ruma, Vrsac, Merosina, Svrljig, Pancevo and Pozega. The programme supports 3500 persons in 35 collective centers.
Project known as “ Open kindergarten for Roma children” has been implemented in 14 RC branches: Kragujevac, Cacak, Boljevac, Zajecar, Sabac, Mladenovac, Valjevo, Aleksinac, Smederevo, Plandiste, Sr.Mitrovica, Gadzin Han, Cukarica, Sombor and Krusevac. This programme includes 414 children and 253 parents. From 14 kindergartens in total, 6 are working five days per week ( Boljevac, Kragujevac, Sr.Mitrovica, Cukarica and Smederevo), while other kindergartens have their activities two or three days per week. Basically, those activities are educative and they include health topics, basic information from language culture, mathematics notions, in addition with understanding of social environment. Therefore, a new and unknown world is opening for Roma children, and they are becoming ready to step into it with joyous expectations. Project dedicated to children with special needs is implemented in following RC branches: Novi Sad, Sid, St.Pazova, Pozarevac, Prokuplje, Velika Plana, Kanjiza, Uzice and Vrbas. The motto of this particular programme is “ Help for different ones”. This programme has been in progress in ten RC branches for 122 children in total, and for 44 parents.
