A Heart as Wide as the Plains of Panonia

Srna Spasojevic, Novi Sad

The Red Cross of Novi Sad was among the first to join the efforts in the immunization process of citizens of Serbia. Since January 20th, every workday, from 8am until 6pm, in Hall 1 of the Novi Sad Fair, volunteers of the Red Cross take the temperature of citizens at the entrance, help with updating lists of patients waiting for the vaccination, and make sure that preventative health measures are being implemented. The Red Cross of Novi Sad has brought in 56 young volunteers who have helped with the vaccination and revaccination of over 130,000 inhabitants of Novi Sad.

Srna Spasojevic (15) is one of the youngest volunteers, and says:

“I have learned how to communicate with people, and so sometimes you realize, when you are having a hard time, that there are others who are going through even worse. I volunteer because in a way I get closer to others, and I help my people in this strange situation, in which we have been since last year. I am happy to be able to contribute to our country`s battle against the corona virus.”

Srna says that volunteering is not any trouble for her, and that if any of the volunteers did not like what they are doing, they would not be spending 10 hours every day at the Fair. For her, this is a great experience.

David Budak (17), has been volunteering for the Red Cross of Novi Sad for seven years, asserts that nothing is difficult, and that what matters is the consideration, kindness, and dedication of the volunteers.

“I spend some six hours on my feet, and it becomes hard, my legs hurt and I feel pain in my back, but then I see those elder citizens, over 80 years old, who have to wait in line, and I know that it is more difficult for them. If I am stationed at the entrance, I will always approach them with a smile and ask them how they are doing, “ says Budak. “They have to feel that they are in good hands here, and that nothing bad can happen to them,” David concludes his story.

There is a silver lining to every cloud of hardship. The COVID epidemic has taught the young volunteers that youth and old age meet, and can join together to make things better for all of us.

According to the latest data from the Government of the Republic of Serbia, 2,325.000 doses of the vaccine against the corona virus have been administered so far in Serbia, and 920.000 people have received the second dose of the vaccine. Over 700 volunteers of the Red Cross have taken part in the immunization process, and have assisted over 180,000 citizen of Serbia in various ways.
