Marking of the Human Rights Day

13/12/2022

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue organized a ceremony on December 10, 2022 in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The celebration under the slogan “No one left behind - celebrating 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” was organized in cooperation with the United Nations Team in Serbia and the OSCE Mission in Serbia, and under the patronage of Ana Brnabić, Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia.

As part of the celebration of this date, which also marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Ministry, together with the United Nations Team in Serbia, developed guidelines for decision-makers on the application of the human rights-based approach and the principle of “No one left behind”, and four thematic panels were organized as part of the event.

Nataša Todorović, associate and psychologist from the Red Cross of Serbia, participated in the panel “No one left behind – solidarity for all generations” and during her address she presented the results of research on intergenerational solidarity conducted in fifteen municipalities in Serbia. This research showed that family solidarity is most strongly expressed in the domain of emotional solidarity, solidarity in contact and functional solidarity, while the role of the state is recognized as the most important in the domain of providing financial support to older persons. Regarding the quality of life, future public policies dealing with the quality of life of older persons should focus on three areas:

  • the quality and availability of education (both in childhood and throughout the entire life cycle, including older age),
  • good preventive healthcare services throughout the life cycle
  • financial security in older age.

Certainly, intergenerational solidarity is best described through the famous anthropologist Margaret Mead's words that connections between generations are necessary for the mental health and stability of a nation.
