11/12/2017

To mark the 100th issue of the Electronic Bulletin of the Red Cross of Smederevo on 8 December a panel discussion was organized in Smederevo, in the Regional Centre for, with participation of dr Vesna Opavsky – University Donja Gorice, Podgorica, whose topic was “The importance of information for humanitarian organisations, with particular accent on use of social networks”, and Nevenka Bogdanovic, Secretary of the Red Cross of Kragujevac and member of the Commission for Information and Promotion of the Red Cross of Serbia, whose topic was “Importance of information for the Red Cross branches, with special accent on the experiences of the Red Cross of Kragujevac”.

The central topic was “Intergenerational solidarity and combating elder abuse”. Natasa Todorovic of the Red Cross of Serbia spoke about the importance of developing intergenerational solidarity in combating elder abuse. Elder abuse is a phenomenon few people know about and even fewer talk about: 1 out of 10 people are exposed to abuse in their older age and only 1 in 24 reports it. It is essential to work on prevention and raising the awareness of public of this public health and social problem. Red Cross of Serbia and HumanaS Network have for years worked on raising awareness and abuse prevention through public advocacy but also through promoting social inclusion of older people as one of the preconditions to prevention of elder abuse.
