New Law on Social Protection in preparation in Serbia

07/07/2017

On 29 June the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia organised a round table discussion entitled “Challenges in providing support services to persons with disabilities and older people”, as part of the public discussion on the announced new Law on Social Protection. Two main topic were discussed: support services aligned with the citizens’ needs and assistance and care provided by other persons. The round table discussion was an opportunity for the representatives of ministries and civil sector to tal freely and openly to each other.

One of the main conclusions of the discussion was that during preparation of the new law, civil society organisations should be involved or consulted along with the representatives of older people and independent bodies protecting human rights. For the new Law on Social Protection it is essential to pay attention to accessibility of services as well as creating innovative services that will improve the quality of life for the two population groups. Equally important is to ensure public discussion about the law before it is adopted as it will improve its stipulations and align them with the citizens’ priorities.

Two Red Cross of Serbia members participated in the round table discussion which enables the organisation to contribute to creating the law and to promote social inclusion of older people.
