SHAPE Training at the Red Cross of Sombor – A Step Toward Fairer Care for Older People in the Local Community

A training session was organized at the Red Cross of Sombor as part of the regional project "Strengthening Access to Health Care, Participation and Social Equity in the Western Balkans (SHAPE)." The training gathered staff and volunteers who provide daily support to vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on older persons.
The training was led by professional associates of the Red Cross of Serbia, Nataša Todorović and Milutin Vračević, using a methodology that fosters active participation, knowledge exchange, and empowerment of local stakeholders. After an introduction and presentation of research findings conducted by SeConS, participants worked on developing locally tailored support models – including home care services, day center programs, and support mechanisms for informal caregivers.
In Sombor, special emphasis was placed on the challenges faced by older people living alone, as well as those with reduced mobility or limited access to public services. Participants shared real-life examples and proposed specific interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of older persons in their community.
The discussion also addressed the need for stronger intersectoral cooperation – especially between health care, social services, and local governments – in order to ensure accessible, continuous, and dignified support in older age.
The SHAPE project aims to respond to the consequences of crises by improving access to health and social care and increasing the participation of vulnerable groups, particularly older persons. It also promotes the importance of mental health and active ageing as key elements of a fairer society.
The project is implemented with the support of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection of the Republic of Austria and the Austrian Red Cross.
