During the first two months of 2021, around 700 volunteers of the Red Cross of Serbia were involved in assisting the health care system in the vaccination process. Red Cross volunteers have provided various types of assistance in the vaccination of around 180,000 citizens in Serbia. The assistance included placing the phone calls to citizens for vaccination and re-vaccination, helping out at the vaccination points and with transport of vulnerable citizens, and in certain places where the vaccination is held on premises of the Red Cross.

“I am happy that I am able to help make the vaccination process happen as quick as possible,” Dorotea Stanojevic (23 years old), a volunteer of the local Red Cross branch of Stari Grad, begins her story.

“Our municipality has the greatest percentage of inhabitants that have been vaccinated,” continues Dorotea with an irresistible smile. Since January 19th this year, she has been spending a few hourd of each day at the vaccination point located in the Health Center of the municiality of Stari Grad. Red Cross volunteers are helping out with the lists of citizens that are to be vaccinated, organizing the time slots, and helping with filling out the forms for those waiting in the line. In Stari Grad, the central municipality of Belgrade, mostly populated by older inhabitants, this help from the Red Cross volunteers is invaluable.

“It is important that the assigned time slots are respected, and then the whole process is very quick. The doctors are kind, and the citizens often thank us for our help. The vaccination point opens at 8 a.m., and by 8 p.m. around 500 people come through on average. There are always three volunteers of the Red Cross, and we take turns every 4 hours,” Dorotea concludes her recount of what she does every day, with much enthusiasm.
