Ageing in Cities – focus Group Interview in Kraljevo

11/10/2017

The Red Cross of Serbia and Serbian Commissioner for Protection of Equality continued the “Ageing in Cities” research project activities. This project is supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and on 6 October 2017 a focus group interview with older people in Kraljevo was conducted.

The information collected trhough focus groups done in different cities showed that there are similarities between them but also some specific features for each city. In Belgrade, for instance, it was underlined that older people do not feel safge while in smaller cities safety does not seem to be such a burning issue. What we did learn is that social isolation presents a huge problem and that Red Cross including older people in its programmes results in older people contributing to social cohesion through their volunteering and transferring their knowledge to younger generations. Through its work on supporting vulnerable people the Red Cross recognizes potential in every group in the society and supports its growth in every person, regardless of their age, profession or gender.

The focus group interview was prefaced by a presentation of the last year’s research on older people in rural areas, also performed by the Red Cross of Serbia and Commissioner for Protection of Equality with UNFPA support. Older people were accompanied by the representatives of municipal administration, Centre for Social Welfare and civil society organisations.
