KEP 3 Project „Improving disaster reduction skills in emergencies and resilience building practices“

20/05/2019

The Red Cross of Serbia has for the past three years implementing „Improving disaster reduction skills in emergencies and resilience building practices” project, an international project coordinated by the Italian Institute for Public Health with participation of Serbian, Albanian, Montenegrin and North Macedonian Institutes for Public Health as well as the Red Cross of Serbia. On Thursday 16 May in the Red Cross of Serbia Congress Hall a final conference of the project was organised with presentation of an important project component – development of the training module. Each of the Institutes were tasked with developing a training module as education platform that can be included in training curriculum in the next period.

The second, practical part of the project was implemented on 17 May 2019 in Mladenovac where, in the Red Cross of Serbia warehouse drill was organised in order to improve knowledge and skills related to response to public health risks in disasters.

The task of the Red Cross of Serbia was to provide practical training to the regional Institutes for Public Health through simulation of a response to a natural disaster that included evacuation, setting up a tent settlement, food distribution and hygiene maintenance in the tent settlement. During the simulation the representatives of Institutes for Public Health could ask questions and make their own suggestions and recommendations on how to improve public health component of the disaster response.

This training once again confirmed the importance of learning practical skills and of simulations, as well as it confirmed that the Red Cross of Serbia is one of the regional leaders in this area with invaluable experience that helps with planning disaster response. In the Red Cross of Serbia work, prevention of public health risk and partnerships with different institutions are important components of the National Society’s success. In the Red Cross of Serbia Natasa Todorovic and Dr Milutin Vracevic coordinated the project.
