Associates of the Red Cross of Serbia, winners of the “Anđelka Milić” award for 2024

12/03/2024

On 06 March 2024, the “Anđelka Milić” award ceremony for the year 2024 was held at the Aeroclub in Belgrade starting at 18:00.

Nataša Todorović and Dr Milutin Vračević, the Red Cross of Serbia expert associates, received the award “For supporting the development of knowledge creation in the field of gender studies in Serbia (theory and research)” with the emphasis that in their continuous work they pay special attention to gender equality, with a special focus on older women who represent a group at risk, highlighting intersectionality as a risk of marginalization of this group of women and the need to observe all phenomena of gender equality through the prism of the entire life cycle. They were among the first to talk about the need to collect data on violence against older women in order to investigate the phenomenon and to design adequate preventive policies and preventive programmes. The research report “Exploring violence against older women in the Western Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine” is a pioneering attempt to shed light on violence against older women not only in Serbia but in the territory of the Western Balkans, plus Moldova and Ukraine. The merging of research work on the basis of which services, training and advocacy activities are created, as well as giving recommendations for the improvement of public policies, highlighting gender equality in all public policies, is recognized as a particularly prominent component of their work. Their work includes regular training of older women on the topic of discrimination, prevention of violence and human rights of older persons, as well as training for gerontocarers and family members.

This award is given by the Section for Feminist Research and Critical Studies of Masculinity (SEFEM), with the aim of strengthening the feminist production of contextualized knowledge, through original and relevant research, as well as their creative use and application in all areas of social life in Serbia. In this way, the SEFEM team wants to acknowledge and permanently preserve the memory of the scientific work, scientific contribution and feminist activism of Anđelka Milić (1942-2014), who was also the first president of SEFEM. This year's jury consisted of Dr. Zorana Antonijević, Dr. Ivana Pantelić and Dr. Lilijana Čičkarić.
