October 1, International Day of Older Persons
On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on October 1, we have decided to Fight Against Ageism! This year, in partnership with the Novi Sad Foundation - European Capital of Culture, the Red Cross of Serbia is organizing the action "Time Machine." Be in the University City on October 1st, from 10 AM to 12 PM, near the bust of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, and step into the "Time Machine" that "provides a glimpse into a potential future."
Through filters, you will see an older version of yourself, and then you will receive a slip of paper from the "Basket of Fate," which will display statistical data about discrimination and the challenges faced by the elderly. Reflect! Imagine the challenges that await you in the future!
In recognition of these challenges and opportunities, the 34th celebration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme: "Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older People Worldwide."
Life expectancy at birth now exceeds 75 years in half of the countries around the world, which is 25 years longer than in 1950. This demographic shift has significantly transformed the field of care, encompassing a wide range of needs for paid and unpaid support in formal and informal settings. As the population ages, the demand for comprehensive healthcare, care, and social support is rising significantly, particularly for older people with conditions such as dementia.
These activities are organized within the framework of the project "Age Against the Machine," implemented under the European Commission's CERV – Network of Towns program, with partners from Denmark, Portugal, Italy, and Poland.
